Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker at the age of an infant and she was forced to provide for the family by working as a maid and server. Ruth lived in a tenement community that was poor of Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. But she quit school in the span of two years of school to take on a acting career. The route she took wasn't without its challenges. In New York, her first assignment was to shoot stills for crime magazines. her dream of performing in the theater she wanted eluded. When she was employed as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit her job and moved back to Boston. She made the ends meet by working as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. In addition, she was a drama student and later graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
